The Transition Accelerator, a new national charity, works to promote the reduction of GHG emissions by applying the Transitions Pathways Methodology to frame, identify, assess, improve, and then advance credible and compelling visions and transition pathways capable of leading Canada to a sustainable future. The organization will convene and work with a diversity of sectors, disciplines and organizations to connect and support existing efforts, develop new opportunities and accelerate their deployment.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Accelerator’s founding Executive Director will be responsible for setting the organization’s strategy for the future, setting up offices in either Calgary or Ottawa, building a strong national brand, and expanding Transition Pathway activity across Canada in a range of sectors. The Executive Director will lead a team of 5 to 10 staff located across the country and manage a budget of over $1 million per year. They will also work closely with the Scientific Advisory Board / Academic Leads, [including the founders of the Transition Accelerator, Drs. David Layzell (CESAR, University of Calgary), James Meadowcroft (Carleton University) and Normand Mousseau (IÉT, Polytechique Montréal and Université de Montréal)] to complement and extend the work that they have already begun. He or she will build networks of influence with private and public funders, as well as industry leaders, academics and government to advance the work of the Accelerator and ensure its long-term sustainability.
As the ideal candidate, you have extensive experience within a sustainability minded organization, reporting to a Board of Directors and working with a combination of public and private funders. As a start-up, The Transition Accelerator is looking for a strategic leader that will establish a national presence for the organization, as well as internal resources to position the organization for success.
Positive, collaborative, and pluralistic, you have exceptional networking skills and a track record in facilitating evidence-based initiatives. You are known for building effective teams that work across sectors and regions to ensure outstanding delivery of programs and services. You are strategically minded and approach business with an entrepreneurial mindset.
To qualify for this position, you bring relevant experience in sustainability or the relevant transferable skills. You are a seasoned leader with a strong drive for results and excellent business acumen. A strong communicator and visionary, you inspire and motivate others. You are fiscally sound with a strong understanding of key organizational functions including human resources, finance, programs, and operations. You value honesty, integrity, and a strong sense of ethics in all decision and actions. Bilingualism is a strong asset.
The Transition Accelerator is open to the Executive Director being located anywhere in Canada with a preference given for Ottawa, Calgary or Montreal.
